Facebook strictly monitors the content that appears in users’ feeds. The main goal is to ensure safety and a comfortable experience for the audience.
Prohibited Content
Ads that are misleading, promise unrealistic results with no effort, contain aggressive, shocking, violent, or bloody imagery, promote unacceptable products (weapons, drugs, tobacco), or feature adult content are blocked immediately.
Restricted Content
Certain categories require extra attention: alcohol, gambling, financial services. Promoting these requires compliance with local laws, age restrictions, and prior approval from Meta.
More details are available in the Meta Transparency Center and the Business Help Center.
How Moderation Works
Ads are reviewed through a combination of automated systems and manual moderation. AI analyzes images, videos, text, landing pages, and metadata. If an ad’s “risk score” exceeds the threshold, it is rejected. Algorithms can make mistakes, especially with new formats or ambiguous content.
If the system is unsure, the ad is sent for manual review. User complaints can also trigger a check. Due to a reduced number of human moderators, many processes are fully automated, which sometimes leads to ads being rejected or approved without clear reasons.
Tips to Increase Approval Chances
- Study advertising policies and content requirements.
- Create high-quality creatives without blurry images or provocative poses.
- Write clear, neutral text without misleading promises.
- Use A/B testing to find moderation-friendly variants.
- Contact Meta support if ads are frequently rejected.
Submitting an Ad for Review
Ads automatically go through review after hitting the Publish button. You can track the status in Ads Manager, and the INSIDE blog explains each status in detail.
Review Timelines
Moderation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 24 hours, and sometimes up to 48 hours or more. Timing depends on:
- Campaign launch time
- Quality of the creative and landing page
- Account history
- Trust level of the business account and payment information
If a review takes too long, wait 24 hours. If there’s no change, you can delete the ad and resubmit it with slight modifications to text, headline, or image, or create a clone on another account with unique creative and link.
What to Do When an Ad is Rejected
Facebook always provides a reason for rejection — in Ads Manager, notifications, Business Manager, or via the email linked to the account. Common reasons:
- Violation of advertising policies (e.g., too aggressive call-to-action)
- Unacceptable content (nudity, shocking images, banned topics)
- Issues on the landing page
- Violations related to personal information
If you believe the block is a mistake, you can request a review in Ads Manager. Most of the time, the verdict is returned within 24 hours.
For urgent ads, you can slightly modify the creative or text and resubmit, but it’s important to identify the cause of rejection to avoid repeating mistakes and to maintain account stability.
